LIVING ROOM MAKEOVER - BUILT IN SHELVES
Step One: We removed the remaining baseboards carefully so we could re-use them. Next we created bases slightly taller than the baseboards using 2x4's and plywood.
I realize now that I skipped a few pictures of the actual construction of the bookshelves in the garage because I WAS FREEZING!!! Literally shivering!
Step Two: We took measurements of the space on either side of the fireplace and made the shelves 3/4" narrower than the space since we were adding trim around all the sides, this space would be hidden. (Tip: Measure the space at the front and back, the walls are rarely straight!) We made the cabinets out of MDF and the backs of the cabinets from shiplap. We purchased the shiplap at Lowe's and only needed 4 boards for this small job.
Step Three: We added all of the trim pieces to the front of the cabinet. Then reinstalled the baseboards.
Step Four: We filled the nail holes and sanded.
Step Five: We painted the mantel, bookshelves and trim (Benjamin Moore) Chalk White in a semi gloss finish. After letting the white surfaces dry, we decided to paint the wall (Benjamin Moore) Phillipsburg Blue to match the walls on either side.
We are planning on moving the cable box to one of the bookshelves which is a project for another weekend. After we can decided on the tile (see previous post!) we will complete the tile around the fireplace and finally we need to locate a couple of small pieces of Super White granite for the tops of the bookshelves.
Overall I am so happy with our living room makeover, it feel much more homey now!
